Lodges Work to Protect Belize Fishing
The minister Responsible for Fisheries, Hon. Rene Monetro has in recent times taken bold moves to address various areas of concern in the fishing industry. His most recent bold and progressive decision has been to pass new fishing regulations which came into effect the 1st of January 2010.
These regulations came in response to the efforts of the owners of fishing lodges at Turneffe Flats, El Pescador and Belize River Lodge who felt strongly that the commercial and sport taking of bonefish, permit and tarpon was having an adverse effect on the fishery and consequently the economic condition of Belize in general as sport fishing, as offered by these lodges, contributed a significant amount of income to the economic stability of Belize. It also called for licensing for sport fishing and severe penalties for violations.
Castafly Travel applauds the efforts of these fine lodges and encourages the Belizean government in the effort to enforce said regulations.
